Emergency support for families and young people
Help with the cost of living (Helping Hand)
If you have an urgent short-term emergency and are unable to buy immediate food, heating or lighting you can apply for Help with the cost of living (Helping Hand).
Help with the cost of living (Helping Hand) is available through food banks, food vouchers, and utility meter top-ups.
You may be able to get a Helping Hand crisis payment if you:
- have experienced a financial shock. For example, an unexpected expense or drop in income that has put pressure on your budget
- may be close to having a financial crisis, and a one-off payment could ease pressure and allow you to maintain control of your finances
