Section 3: Collaborating on Effective Prevention and Diversion Services

What we have done, what happened as a result, and what we will do next.

What we have done in 2024 to 2025

  • Supported 173 children through the multi-agency schools project
  • Worked in partnership with Wycombe Wanderers Football Club to promote awareness of diversionary activities at Community Action Days
  • Engaged 38 children in diversionary programmes through the Turnaround project
  • Launched the Youth Diversion Programme in partnership with Thames Valley Police
  • Rolled out the Act Now programme at Aylesbury Police Station, engaging children at the earliest opportunity when they are arrested for specific violent offences. The YJST are meeting with the child in custody within 90 minutes of notification, 7 days a week.
  • Participated in a multi-agency Scrutiny Panel to evaluate the consistency of decision-making

What has happened as a result

  • Latest data shows that only 9.9% of those engaged by the multi-agency school’s project went on to enter the youth justice system within a 12-month tracking period
  • A strong working relationship developed with Wycombe Wanderers Football Club has led to increased access to their diversionary programmes
  • Children have an opportunity to access support that diverts them from receiving a disposal
  • As of April 2025, eight hildren have been supported through the Act Now programme
  • Opportunities have been identified for re-interviewing children when an offence changes

What we will do next

  • Contribute to the evaluation of the Thames Valley Police Youth Diversion Programme
  • Provide data that supports Thames Valley Police in developing their Act Now diversion approach
  • Expand the Turnaround offer to include children receiving Conditional and Absolute Discharges
  • Support the partnership in developing a serious youth violence diversion pathway
  • Engage with the local transformation programme and the Children’s Reform agenda to ensure prevention is a key focus
