Section 4: Custodial Remand, Custody, and Constructive Resettlement

What we have done, what has happened as a result, and what we will do next.

What we have done in 2024 to 2025

  • Delivered Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act (LASPO) training to front-line social work managers
  • Increased engagement from partners with our custody panels, held when a custodial sentence is a potential outcome
  • Provided training for Magistrates on the lived experience of a custodial sentence
  • Delivered Court and Remand Process training to all staff and managers
  • Promoted family inclusion in all resettlement plans

What has happened as a result

  • Workers are attending court for children and can contribute to discussions focused on their needs
  • Sentencing proposals are more robust and focused on achieving the safety of the self and within the community through the partnership approach
  • Children have been supported through resettlement via a greater partnership approach between professionals and parents

What we will do next

  • Re-launch the Magistrates' feedback form to gather learning on YJST report-writing and proposals
  • Contribute to the evaluation of children / young adults transferred to Probation, taking place acrossthe Thames Valley
  • Board to review every decision where a child is remanded to local authority care or custody
