Section 4: Delivering the Principles of Child First
The YJST is fully committed to delivering a Child First approach in line with the four tenets:
- As Children
- Building Pro-Social Identity
- Collaborating with Children
- Diverting from Stigma
- Training has been delivered to volunteers and magistrates to raise awareness of the Child First model
- Development workshops have been run with staff to support creative practice
- Feedback has been gathered from children on their experiences of working with the YJST through a digital questionnaire
- Office spaces have been redesigned in collaboration with our YP4All group
- Children have worked alongside a local artist to design a mural at the Wycombe YJST office (see photo)
- Staff have begun writing to the child within their contact recording
- Children have contributed to the redesign of the YJST website
- The AIR (Activities, Interactions, Roles) intervention plan has been introduced to build on children’s strengths and pro-social identity
- Managers completed a self-assessment on Child First, shaping future developments
- A newsletter has been launched in response to feedback from children
- A video [Need video link] has been developed to share with other professionals and help with their understanding of Child First. This included input from children.
- The activities offered to children have been extended, including specific projects delivered with partners
- The Team was nominated for a Proud of You award for our approach to working with children
