Section 4: Policing and Detention in Police Custody

What we have done, what has happened as a result, and what we will do next.

What we have done in 2024 to 2025

  • The Youth Concordat between Buckinghamshire Council and the Police has been signed
  • Increased the volunteer pool for Appropriate Adults and provided extensive training
  • Developed a process to inform the Police where a child being held in custody has identified communication and educational needs
  • Ensured a letter is sent to any child not known to the service before their first court appearance to explain our role and the support we can provide
  • Audit of children held in police custody to understand this cohort better

What has happened as a result

  • Children have access to appropriate adults trained in taking a child-first approach
  • Improved the experience of children in custody, supporting them to have their needs met
  • Children and their families have more information available to them before the court
  • Audit findings shared with the Police for internal review

What we will do next

  • Work alongside the Road Traffic Officers to develop interventions for children committing driving offences
  • Deliver refresher training for all front-line staff, volunteers and the Out of Hours Children's Services on being an appropriate adult
  • Monitor and review every child held overnight in police custody to establish learning
