Work/study programmes and apprenticeships
Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships combine learning practical skills with studying for a qualification. You’ll get training that’s relevant to your job and you’ll receive a wage.
You can start an apprenticeship at age 16, 18 or older.
Requirements vary between industry, job role and employer, but generally you can do an apprenticeship if you:
- are over 16 years old
- have up to five GCSEs at a grade 9 to 4 (A* to C) including English and Maths (entry requirements may vary)
- can show you have the skills required to complete the qualification
There are higher levels of apprenticeships available depending on your age and qualifications.
Your employer will provide all on-the-job training and pay your wages. Your role will involve working at least 30 hours a week.
You will receive the national minimum wage, paid holidays and bank holidays.
You will work with experienced colleagues who will help you gain skills and knowledge relevant to the job.
Your training could take place in a classroom setting or within the workplace.
There are several websites to find information on or apply for apprenticeships. The Government apprenticeships website has a range of resources and you can search for apprenticeships based on your interest and location.
- The Apprenticeship Guide contains concise summaries of every apprenticeship offered in England, general career advice, employer advertising, and a directory of providers.
- UCAS Apprenticeships has a range of resources and industry guides, and you can explore the different types of apprenticeships and their entry requirements.
