Young SEND inspectors
Our SEND Young Inspectors visited local activities and clubs suitable for young people with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).
The feedback helped to develop the clubs or activities to ensure that they are meeting the needs of SEND young people, as well as providing young people with an insider’s view of what an activity is really like.
Here are some activities and clubs inspected and what the young people said about them.
We found Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital really easily. Parking was really easy and we were right next to the entrance.
All the staff were really kind when we arrived and they were all expecting us which was really nice. Although it was the Easter holidays and really busy the staff gave us all the details of where to go, what to do and when the talks were going to happen. The man who did the talks was really helpful, answered my questions and was keen to show us lots of things. We saw the owls, falcons and kites.
I really liked the viewing area in the hospital. There was a baby rabbit in a hammock and a squirrel as well as birds. A ladder was there so you could get higher and look down into their beds which was good.
There are lots of quiet areas to sit in, even benches in the car park so it’s easy to have some space.
As it’s the biggest wild animal hospital in Europe there is lots to see and lots of different animals, but it’s not too big. It feels small and friendly and all the staff are very calm and smiley.
It was warm and sunny when we visited but you would need a coat if it rains as there are lots of different buildings to see, including a hedgehog museum which has a huge collection.
The inspection took place on 4 April 2023.
On Sunday 19 June 2022, Aylesbury Town Council hosted its third Soap Box Derby. Aylesbury Town Council promoted the event widely and one of our SEND Young Inspectors, Amy, and her dad decided to attend. They thought it would be the perfect opportunity to put Amy’s new SEND Inspector skills into practice.
The event was good and there was plenty to do. The timing was perfect, it was not too long. It was in a nice park that was easy to get to, and we were able to park nearby.
It was good that there was a sensory space because people with sensory issues should be aware it is a noisy event. Also, people who find it hard to wait should be aware there are some long queues. I liked the deaf singer for the presentation at the end.
The Bucks Goat Centre was really easy to find by car. On the experience, I was able to feed and pet the animals. The people were nice, they told me lots of information and helped me understand the risks. They told us that we could step away if it got too much. I was made to feel comfortable and really enjoyed being around the goats jumping. I would definitely recommend it to others.
