Section 1: Feedback 'You said, we did'

Every child is offered the opportunity to provide feedback at the end of their YJST intervention via My Journey. This provides them with a chance to reflect on their experience of the whole Youth Justice system.

The information is shared in biannual reports to the Board so that partners can take away learning for their individual service areas.

An example of feedback using the my journey template

The YJST also produces a newsletter for children, which provides opportunities for feedback and shares with them how the service has responded.

Children said

  • 100% felt listened to by their worker
  • 100% felt their worker takes the time to get to know them
  • 95% felt their worker understood them
  • 90% felt their worker helped them achieve their best
  • 62% felt they were involved in decisions about them
  • 52% were told they were doing well regularly

We did

  • Introduced ways for children to attend meetings about them, contribute their views beforehand and to have a named person who will feed back to them what happened
  • Held a workshop with practitioners that included a focus on ensuring children’s strengths are at the centre of every intervention and are regularly reviewed

Feedback

Buckinghamshire YJST creates opportunities for parents/carers and persons/communities harmed to provide regular feedback.

This feedback is gathered through different methods, including:

  • face-to-face
  • end-of-intervention reflections
  • QR codes
  • learning gathered from any complaints

Summaries are provided to the Partnership Board as part of wider service improvement discussions.

Children we worked with said

  • “I was able to have my voice heard and felt like my worker understood both sides”.
  • “I felt like they didn’t judge me and cared about my future.”
  • “I now know that I can have a voice and understand that I am allowed to have a safe space.”

Parents/carers we worked with said

  • “The YJST worker has changed our lives around. She is very supportive and goes out of her way to help him, help us and get help from other services.”
  • “(My son) has been able to speak freely and has learnt how to be remorseful. He has been given the opportunity to learn and make better choices in the future.”

Persons harmed we work with said

  • “Very happy everyone has listened to me and took it on board; he said sorry, and I got the letter, which was good.”
  • “Thank you for ringing. I appreciate your help & support. Happy that you have called and there is someone to keep me updated.”

Other professionals we work with said

  • “I have really enjoyed working with you, and I do so hope that we have helped the family rebuild and offered a path to a successful future. You really are incredible and a true inspiration; your hard work and dedication to the youths and their families are second to none.”
  • “We have been looking to rethink how we record our case notes, particularly for face-to-face interventions, so that we are consistent across the team. I really like your style of recording your case notes, so I have decided to trial a similar template here.”
