Section 2: Supporting children to stay in suitable education

Buckinghamshire YJST recognise that access to suitable education is a key factor in preventing offending and reoffending. Over the last 12 months, the service has:

  • Delivered targeted intervention to children post-16 who are without an education, training or employment placement, to support their access to appropriate provision
  • Collaborated with Education partners to audit children’s experiences of education, leading to constructive feedback on each individual case
  • Established the Aylesbury YJST office as a registered Exam Centre, allowing children to sit exams in an environment they are familiar with
  • Supported 1 child to achieve a functional skills qualification, with further plans for other exams
  • Provided tutoring support for children sitting exams to increase the likelihood of a positive outcome
  • Embedded pathway plans for Year 11 students, ensuring they have achievable post-16 options
  • Provided support to children on GCSE results day to explore options where grades did not meet expectations
  • Developed partnership arrangements with the main local provider of alternative provision to support reintegration to mainstream education
  • Enhanced management oversight of education needs where a child is on a reduced timetable through the quality assurance process
  • Attended a range of partnership education meetings to represent the views of children, including the Fair Access Board, the SEN Partnership Meeting, and the Not in Education, Training or Employment (NEET) Solutions Panel
  • Delivered training to practitioners on the importance of Communication Profiles and how these can be proactively applied in supporting the communication needs of children
  • Developed stronger links with higher education establishments through student placements
