5. School Years 7 to 9

School years 7 and 9 are for children aged eleven to fourteen years old and are the first years of your child's school journey in secondary school, also known as Key Stage 3 (KS3).
Moving up to secondary school
If you are in or are about to move up to year 7 and are feeling nervous there is lots of support and advice to help you in your journey moving up to secondary school.
Attending one of the how to cope with moving to secondary school courses could also really help to build your confidence and help you feel more prepared.
What to expect
Moving up to secondary school is a big change for a young person, and it is normal to feel anxious. You may find things will be a bit different, but it's good to remember that:
- not everything will change
- talk to your friends, family, and teachers if you are worried
- your mental health matters, take time for yourself
- if you are not sure about what GCSE or National Qualification subjects to choose you can speak to a careers adviser or teacher to discuss your options.

There is support and advice on helping to prepare you for school years 7 to 9, and what to expect during this time.
Buckinghamshire’s Family Centres offer a range of youth courses and youth drop-ins offer to help and support teenagers. There are also a variety of parenting programmes for parents and carers of children and young people of all ages.
The SEND Local Offer also has information about the help available for young people with SEND in education.
Youthspace has lots of information, advice and support for young people aged 11 to 18 (up to 25 with SEND).
The Buckinghamshire Family Learning team run a variety of free courses for parents and carers of children and young people across Buckinghamshire.
There are lots of Secondary educational resources for Secondary School children aged 12 to 18.
